Present and future challenges in building process

Johan Svensson, SWECO, Göteborg

Abstract:

Finally it has become standard with tough demands on energy, environment and sustainability in the construction industry! For those of us who work with these issues and like challenges and problem solving, this is great!

However, nothing is done just because a tough requirement has been set on the building. The requirements need to be transformed into a solution and despite the efforts you might need to compromise due to economy or conflicts with other demands.

Some of the most recurrent challenges in the building process, despite the year 2014, are windows, air leakage, thermal bridges, energy measurement, and optimization of technical systems.

These issues will hopefully decrease over time but new ones will most likely occur. Some of the major future challenges in the construction industry in my opinion are: fulfilment of all three sustainability perspectives, local energy production, local area energy usage, energy storage systems, DC-systems in buildings, optimized use of functions (eg control of solar shading), and monitoring and verification of demands.
