Bursting phenomena in adaptive systems
Karl Johan Åström, Lund University
Abstract:
Bursting is a phenomenon where periods of operation with small fluctuations are mixed with sudden large excursions. Bursting has been observed in many technical and biological systems. The talk presents simple deterministic and stochastic mechanisms that give rise to bursting in adaptive systems. The deterministic effect is chaotic, and the stochastic effect is associated with probability distributions with fat tails.
