Preparing Students for Systems Engineering Challenges of the Future

Christiaan Paredis, USA National Science Foundation

Abstract:

As systems engineering practice is changing, the education of systems engineers must change also. Many of the systems engineering graduate programs are still based on the practices that were developed in the aerospace and defense context, at a time when computing power was limited, and the system boundaries were well-defined and the system complexity was considerably smaller than it is today. As we extend the application of systems engineering to new domains, and as we take advantage of rapidly evolving enabling technologies to support systems engineering practices, the education of systems engineers must also adapt. This presentation will explore the skills systems engineers will need to be successful in this new context, and will weigh the trade-offs one will need to make when developing educational experiences in which these skills can be acquired.
